Chapter Twenty-Seven

CANDY AND Ivy sat through a half-dozen more bouts of Jack overheating and them trying to keep him cool and fed. More food was delivered both for Jack and for them. When any others approached the bathroom door, Jack’s ears would flip back and he’d growl a terrifying sound. Candy had shouted to them to leave the food and the room and they would retrieve it.

Jack ate and drank when coaxed. He purred when Ivy or Candy petted him and even laid his head in their laps, and took turns with whom he’d lavish affection on. He really was acting like a giant house cat—scary since he could probably have bitten either of them in half without even trying.

“The virus is weakening. That’s a good sign, right? I can barely smell it anymore.” Ivy told Candy. He nibbled on some of the chicken they’d been brought. This chicken was cooked, but they still shared it with Jack, who seemed to like licking it off their fingers. Candy hoped neither of them wound up missing a digit or two by the time they were done.

“I hope so. He looks better than when we first came in. He’s not as warm either.” Candy rubbed Jack’s flank. He did look a lot better. Still too thin, but it was likely the change that had done that. They’d deal with the heat again if they needed to.

Ivy made to grab up another piece of chicken, but Jack reached out a paw to grab it. One of his massive claws slid into the back of Ivy’s hand like a hot knife into butter. Ivy gasped. Candy jumped up, ready to rip the door open and throw Ivy out the door if Jack attacked. But Jack made a sound, something between a grunt and a whimper. The claw retracted, and he eased his paw back. The wound welled up with blood. Jack whined and put his head on his paws like he was sorry. Was he still in there? Did the human part of Jack realize he’d hurt Ivy?

“How bad is it?” Candy asked as he rushed to Ivy’s side.

“Not bad, I think. Just stings a little.” It bled pretty heavily. Ivy didn’t seem flustered. Candy examined the wound. It didn’t look like Jack had hit anything big. It wasn’t spurting like a vein had broken, just a big cut right between the bones in the back of Ivy’s hand. Candy could probably do a decent job bandaging it and getting the bleeding to stop.

Paris put first aid kits in all the rooms, right? Wasn’t that a requirement for a large hotel like this? Candy glanced around the room until he saw a wall panel marked with the first aid symbol. He opened it and found it packed with gauze and antiseptic and bandages. Thank Goddess.

He turned to find Jack curled half in Ivy’s lap, licking at the bloodied back of Ivy’s hand, while Ivy laughed. “His tongue is like a really soft hair brush. It tickles!” Ivy told Candy as he returned to his side with the supplies.
